Classroom Ideas

  1. Hold a class discussion on what is meant by the term ‘rights’. Expand the discussion to explore the notion of ‘rights for children’. Compare the UN Rights of the Child and UNICEF’s Rights of a Child.
  2. Invite students to explore the information on the UN and UNICEF websites:
    1. United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child
  3. Continue the discussion on rights, posing the following questions:
    1. Why are rights important?
    2. How are rights protected?
    3. What might happen if these rights were removed?
  4. Organise students into pairs and ask them to choose one of the UN or UNICEF’s child rights. Invite the students to collaboratively work together to identify what ‘removing or taking this right away from children’ might mean. If this right was taken away from children what are the consequences, repercussions, outcomes?
  5. Provide students with access to Light bulb moment (Resource 18 below) and ask them to complete.
  6. Hold a class discussion by posing the question,“What was the light bulb moment?” Ask the students how it made them feel thinking about a right of a child being taken away.
  7. Invite the students to design a poster about Rights of a Child. They can include any rights they believe should be in their top 12.
