At approximately 4.50pm on Monday 1 May 2017, a man entered a retail store on The Strand in Wellard. The man spent over half an hour browsing the aisle’s and picking up items, trying to engage the shop attendant in conversation. The man began to place items in a shopping basket. At approximately 5.30pm the shop attendant closed the front doors as it was closing time. The man walked towards the door with the shopping basket full of items making no attempt to pass through the till area.


The man attempted to leave the store when the shop attendant grabbed the shopping basket he was holding. A struggle has ensued with both parties pulling one side of the shopping basket. The victim told the suspect he needed to make payment. The man then said “I’ve got a screwdriver, ill stab you”.


The man reached for his waistband where the shop attendant reported seeing a bulge as if something was tucked in his waistband. As such she let go and the man quickly left the store on foot walking towards the Wellard Train Station taking with him the basket full of items. The store attendant quickly locked the store and called police.


Police have released a CCTV image of a man who they believe can assist them with their investigation.


The man is described as: Dark skinned, 30-35 years of age, medium build, approximately 170cm tall, wearing dark baseball cap with short dark hair, sunglasses on top of his head, a dark beard, black and grey t-shirt, black tracksuit pants.
