One of Australia’s elusive fugitives was captured in Sydney’s north-west hiding under a child’s bed and is now behind bars in Queensland.
Police from the Public Order and Riot Squad were assisted by officers from the Hawkesbury LAC Proactive Crime Team in attending an address on Nightingale Street, Glossodia.
Jayde Alfred Schackow’s arrest came after “extensive” work to discover his whereabouts as part of Operation Roam: Fugitive Hunt, NSW Police said.
Operation Roam: Fugitive Hunt is part of an annual national campaign by Crime Stoppers and police, aimed at locating and arresting some of Australia’s wanted persons suspected of serious crimes, who may have fled interstate.
Schackow, 29, went on the run while on parole in Queensland after serving a prison term in 2010 for violent offences including acts intended to maim or disfigure, burglary and dangerous use of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm. His photo had been circulated around the country since 2016 as part of Operation Roam.
He was found about 930 kilometres away from his home city of Logan in Queensland at the house on Nightingale Street in Glossodia, in the Hawkesbury region.
He had been living and working in the area, where he has family connections, for at least two years.
Schackow was charged with the outstanding offences as well as assault occasioning actual bodily harm relating to a domestic violence incident in Marayong, in Sydney’s north-west, in July 2016.
