BACKGROUND:

Lake Monger Reserve is less than four kilometres north-west from the city of Perth and the lake’s surface area covers 70 hectares (170 acres). The lake is nestled between the suburbs of Leederville, Wembley and Glendalough.

CASE DETAILS:

At about 9.30am on Tuesday 11 April 1989, two friends arrived at the lake as they were volunteers who rescued sick or injured water birds. The two friends walked anti clockwise around the circular lake and stopped briefly to speak with some council workers.

Continuing their walk one of the friends spotted what she first thought was a dead swan on the lake in an exposed bank area near a storm water drain. After a closer look she realised it was a baby floating face down.

The baby’s feet were touching the shoreline with his head pointing toward the middle of the lake.

It is believed the baby was between 24 and 48 hours old, and the result of a full-term pregnancy.

The child and his mother have never been identified.
