BACKGROUND:

Anne Cecille Zappelli, was born in May 1949, lived with her parents in Morawa, a town situated about 160km’s inland from Geraldton, where she worked at the local post office exchange.

Miss Zappelli was a popular person in Morawa and held in high regard by all who knew her.

CASE DETAILS:

On Wednesday 17 September 1969, Miss Zappelli went to Geraldton with a number of other people to sit for postal examinations, scheduled to finish on 23 September 1969.

On the evening of Monday 22 September, Miss Zappelli went to the Oasis Drive-in (pictured), situated in Rowe Street, Wonthella (Geraldton) to watch the movie ‘Counterpoint’ along with her female roommate and two male friends.

Around 11:00pm, prior to the conclusion of the movie, Miss ZAPPELLI left her acquaintances, walking alone down Rowe Street (now North West Coastal Highway). She did not have a purse or handbag in her possession.

This was the last time Miss Zappelli was seen alive.

Miss ZAPPELLI was reported as a missing person around 8:30am Tuesday 23 September.

LOCATED:

At about 1:25pm on Wednesday 24 September 1969, the body of Miss Zappelli was discovered 50 metres off Rowe Street and 300 metres south of Bayly Street, Geraldton.

A post mortem examination revealed that it was likely Miss Zappelli was murdered soon after leaving the drive inn.

The person or persons responsible for Miss  ZAPPELLI’s murder have not yet been identified.
